When I took the first safety course, the instructor advised us never to shift to neutral at a stop light or sign. The idea was to shift to first and keep your eyes peeled for any sudden need to get out of the way of trouble. As for the clutch, he said a wet clutch on a bike could be used for downshifting or whatever without noticable wear as compared to the dry clutch on a car.
